Mumford and Sons — Sigh No More

Album Review, Reviews Written by Emily Jane November 22, 2009
Mumford and Sons — Sigh No More I’ve never learned to drive, and throughout the course of our relationship, my dearest fiancé has often been my source of transport; a warm alternative to bus shelters and icy footpaths – and an alternative equipped with a stereo.  The downside?  The endless old man, middle of the road, hippy folk Canadiana soundtrack he insists on pouring into every journey. I don’t like songs about farmers or the prairies, I don’t like banjos, and I definitely don’t disappear off to Folk Fest every summer like 90% of my city counterparts.  I’m pretty open-minded when it comes to most music, but I’ve always struggled with folk – its lack of complexity in arrangement, in voice and in lyrics; its generic sound, and the whole image that goes along with it.  Maybe it’s because I grew up in Britain, and my exposure to anything even slightly folk was pretty much limited to the Cotton-Eyed Joe, but I’ve grown... The N Result — Lines

Album Review Written by Sarah Tollie November 16, 2009
The N Result — Lines With Lines, New Brunswick, NJ-bred band The N Result pops and punks its way through a twelve-track trek--even surprising with doses of soul, hip-hop, and blues. Unsurprisingly, the members are as diverse as the music. "It's a natural result of putting six people from different backgrounds together," says Ross Lippencott, vocalist, guitarist, and manager for the band. That organic, DIY-tune pervades most of the disc's space--but like others under the radar, the band yearns for bigger, better things. On the aptly-titled "Hollywood," Lippencott and MC Chase Innis consider an oft-illusory dream:  fame. Between booking Greyhounds, Lippencott laments, "I ain't got a leading lady of my own." It's the least of his worries--and he knows it. "On My Shoulders," Lines' defiant opening track, casts a shadow on record labels and routines, the "weight of the world" and "dark days" coming to a head at the hands of drummer Nate Sankary and guitarist Dan Bascom's Santana-strength riffs. Lippencott delivers both with startling soul and intensity--but the fire flickers. The title track "Lines" and Maroon... Read More »

Wynonna Judd Pulls a Kanye West, Disses Taylor Swift for CMA Awards Success

Editorials Written by Max Neibaur November 15, 2009
Wynonna Judd Pulls a Kanye West, Disses Taylor Swift for CMA Awards Success Country music star Wynonna Judd snarled through her ogre-looking face on the red carpet of the Country Music Association Awards that Taylor Swift didn’t deserve her accolades because she’s too young. “You want my honest comment? It’s too much too soon,” Judd said. Once a very young CMA Award winner herself, Judd also told interviewers before the show, “My thing is, being a home-school mom, I want kids to earn it, and I think some time ... 'cause mom and I rode in a car for the first year of our career to visit radio stations. There was a making of the star; there was a rising up…” It is easy for one to perceive Judd’s statements as a huge slam on Swift when Judd uses words such as “I want kids to earn it,” insinuating that Swift has not.  One could give Judd the benefit of the doubt and say she was just worried that all this... The Age of Rockets Come Up with the Most Music Fan Friendly Idea Ever

Articles Written by Max Neibaur November 14, 2009
The Age of Rockets Come Up with the Most Music Fan Friendly Idea Ever Artists and bands often have multiple ways of playing their songs and, frequently, fans prefer one of the non-album versions of the song.  Anyone who has ever experienced this should get in a moderately long but growing line of people that desire to kiss the feet of Andrew Futral and The Age of Rockets. The Age of Rockets (Andrew Futral, Saul Simon-MacWilliams, Bess Rogers and Adam Christagau), an unsigned indie band out of New York, has come up with the idea to record three versions of ten different songs and release it as a 30-track triple album.  This way, fans can pick their favorite of the three different recordings of each song thereby creating their own special official version of the album. The Age of Rockets ask for donations to make their triple album idea a reality The band refers to this idea as a “choose your own adventure album” in reference to the once popular children books. Interview with Matt Watts of The Starting Line

Interviews Written by Liz_Kantner November 13, 2009
Interview with Matt Watts of The Starting Line On Monday I went to The Starting Line's Somebody's Gonna Miss You CD/DVD show at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The World Cafe Live is one of my favorite venues in Philadelphia, right on the edge of University City. There is a small stage upstairs and a much larger one downstairs. Before the show I was able to talk to Matt Watts for a while about The Starting Line members new projects, the CD/DVD release and plans for the future of the band. Kenny Vasoli was busy signing autographs and the other members Tom Gryskiewicz and Mike Golla were busy setting up for the show as I followed Matt to a small seating area to do the interview. He was incredibly nice and overly grateful for the interest in Somebody's Gonna Miss Us. Frequency Magazine: Tonight Kenny, Mike and Tom's other bands will be performing. How are their new sounds different from The Starting Line? Matt Watts:... Read More »

Muse — The Resistance

Album Review Written by Emily Jane November 12, 2009
Muse — The Resistance I’m pretty new around here, but I decided my first review would have to be of the latest effort from my all-time favorite band, Muse.  The Resistance, the fifth studio album from the British alt-rock trio, had a lot of hype to live up to.  Following 2007’s HAARP tour (including a spectacular performance with aerial trapeze artists, full orchestras, 70,000+ crowds and giant video screens the wind could blow through) and the storming international success of Black Holes and Revelations (despite the band’s detour from their usual rock, and exploration of the new electronic, funk and industrial terrain) – the stakes were set pretty high. To be honest, I was surprised at Revelations’ success.  It wasn’t what Muse fans were used to, and though die-hards found a way to love it anyway, it all seemed a little too reminiscent of when Radiohead went and did Hail to the Thief.  It wasn’t what we fell in love... Ludacris & Shawnna — How Low Can You Go

Single Review Written by birdykins November 9, 2009
Ludacris & Shawnna — How Low Can You Go Calling all Luda fans! The first single off the Ludacris and Shawnna collaboration has just dropped. The album, The Battle of the Sexes has been in the works for three years but still lacks a release date. The album is based on the premise of showing differing gender perspectives, though on the first couple of listens this doesn’t present in the single How Low Can You Go, at all. The song is exactly what Ludacris fans have been waiting for. It's is catchy and just a little bit annoying, the way every good Luda hit has always been. It brings back memories of What’s Your Fantasy, a song that Shawnna also lent her voice to. How Low Can You Go will be all over the radio and pumping through the clubs so you better learn to love it now. Although Ludacris and Shawnna don’t take the song or the genre anywhere new, they stick to what... Read More »

Ashley Monroe — Satisfied

Album Review Written by Jamie November 9, 2009
Ashley Monroe — Satisfied With a voice reminiscent of traditional female country singers and strikingly similar to LeAnn Womack, Ashley Monroe delivers a solid debut album that sadly never got a proper release due to a merger. I Don't Want To Be is a haunting tale about longing for love while others are complaining about being tied down. Ashley sings with conviction and emotion that is raw and real. Pony is an interesting take on a tale as old as time: What can I do to be yours? Monroe wonders if she could be his girl if she "had a pony", "had a baby", or if "you were a cowboy". In another track about wanting love, Used is the story of girl that knows that she's not some shiny, bright new thing on a rack ripe for the picking. She's been used and battered but somehow remains hopeful that in the end, she'll be worth a... Read More »
