Chris Young — The Man I Want To Be

Album Review Written by Jamie September 28, 2009
Chris Young — The Man I Want To Be Young's Sophomore album The Man I Want To Be was released on September 01, 2009 and so far it has produced two singles: Voices and Gettin' You Home (The Black Dress Song). The former didn't do so well on the charts but the latter reached number six on the charts. This seems to be an album that has captured the very essence of a country album with songs about being proud of who you are, family, love, change and everything that comes with it, honesty, and of course, a traditional country song. There's a good combination of the fun country songs that we all love to sing along to like anthems and those vulnerable, raw songs that are easy to relate to. Of the anthem-type songs, the stand outs are That Makes Me, a song about being proud of who you are and what you love, and Twenty-One Candles, a song about a... Read More »

Get Wrecked by The New Collisions

Concert Review Written by Thomas September 18, 2009
Get Wrecked by The New Collisions On August 16th of this year I was working a show for the B52s. There was to be an opening act, a band called “The New Collisions.” I had never heard of them, nor had anyone else I work with at the theatre. Shortly before the B52s sound check is to begin a group of younger musicians appears—my 1st thought is they’re too young to be the opening act—I was wrong. It was four guys and a girl. They looked like the fairly typical “college” type though the girl had very short platinum blonde hair. I was thinking that I shouldn’t get my hopes up and just be glad the headliner was gonna rock out. The B52s finish their sound check and we scramble to get the opening act set up so they can do their sound check and we can all eat dinner before the show starts. After they get set up, I head... Kanye West gives Taylor Swift publicity boost at 2009 MTV VMAs

Editorials Written by Max Neibaur September 18, 2009
Kanye West gives Taylor Swift publicity boost at 2009 MTV VMAs If Kanye West’s hijacking of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech was not a publicity stunt, then I am ready to believe that Marilyn Manson really is the Antichrist. I could be pissed at Kanye, Swift, Beyonce and possibly Jay-Z (rumor has it, he is the mastermind behind the PR stunt); however, these kind of foolish antics would never be possible in a world where media consumers were not so gullible and stupid.  I blame the nincompoop mainstream masses for making such a big deal about and believing in this kind of stuff. The Event MTV had all of its cameras perfectly positioned to capture this supposedly spontaneous outburst.  Also, MTV’s cut to Pink perfectly timed out so that Kanye was already onstage to make it look more abrupt and shocking than if the audience saw Kanye gradually making his way up onto the stage.  Later, when Beyonce called out Swift to finish her speech, they had color-matching red... La Roux — I’m Not Your Toy

Single Review Written by Sarah Tollie September 9, 2009
La Roux — I’m Not Your Toy Twenty-one-year old Elly Jackson is red-haired and readily armed with her not-so-dull-'do.  This better half of British synth-pop sensation La Roux prepares her latest statement on "I'm Not Your Toy," a three minute, thirty second slice of falsettos,  slicked-up 80s beats, and infamous, Elly-style claims. On the heels of the fiery "Bulletproof," "I'm Not Your Toy" could easily be its sequel, sliding in-between Jackson's declarations of "I'll never let you sweep me off my feet," and "This time, baby, I'll be bulletproof." Always accusing, she remarks, "You don't want me, you just like the attention."     The act already has its share. With a number one UK single ("Bulletproof") and "Best New Act" noms quickly crowding  its quirky closet space, La Roux is red-hot. We see it—and Elly sings it. But stepping out and cooling it down sometimes isn't a crime, Miss... Read More »

Reba McEntire — Keep On Loving You

Album Review Written by Jamie September 2, 2009
Reba McEntire — Keep On Loving You Keep in Loving You is Reba's first studio album in 6 years that wasn't a compilation package. In 2008 she released 50 Greatest Hits in celebration of her turning 50; In 2005 there was #1s; And in 2007 she released a complete duet album Reba Duets. This album features 13 tracks of pure Reba. Reba shows us her roots with the down home I Want A Cowboy, something that was missing from sassy but lacking the lead off single, Strange - with a song about not wanting your average love and not putting up with things many people do. Showing off her sassy side she sings "I've seen enough to know what I like" and goes on to list various requirements such as Wrangler, Stetson and "all that stuff". The theme of the album seems to sass as Reba again shows it again with Consider Me Gone as she is adamant that... Read More »
